Has Hollywood lost it's artistic merit with loss in Films Originality? What are Movies Just Money?

Has Hollywood lost it's artistic merit over the past few years? Well that might just be a good question for anyone who has recently seen the decline in original movies. Over the years we have seen a lot of movies come out of Hollywood and a majority of them are remakes of other movies that came out only a few years earlier. Could this be due to the decline in original thinking or the fact that Hollywood is going to build on what has already made a lot of money?
If we take a look at some the movies in 2010-2011 and those coming out in 2012 we will find that a good portion of those prior to 2012 have been remade. Though some of the original movies that have come from Hollywood or the sequels that have come in have been decent but not that great to catch the attention of the movie goer. The artistic merit in Hollywood has declined over the years and the originality of the movies has had an impact on the viewer. At one time we could go to the theater and watch a new and original movie that would draw us in and than we would ask for more. In today's market you find that with all the movies coming out in 2012 a little less than half of them are nothing more than remakes with new actors/actresses and little to no original story.
A disappointment in this case could be look at the Star Wars trilogy, all these years and six movies. which have all been re-released multiple times since 1998 with added scenes or new graphics and animations. In 2012 we will see all six released in 3D this is nothing more than another way of making money off something that is already big. Though the question has to ask, is it really going to make as much as is expected?
Originality
Originality in movies from the past is what some would call a great film to see and that was due to the writing and the effort being placed into making the films. In the late 80's and early to mid 90's you could get hyped up about going to the movies to see a new action flick or horror movie, you could take you girlfriend or wife to see that romantic comedy or romantic film that would keep you both interested and talking about it for days. Today when we see a preview for a movie it is something that was just put out a few years ago and just re-done to appeal to a more updated crowd.
Movies such as Spider-man which is being re-done for 2012 has the same storyline as the first Spider-man movie with different actors and actresses playing the roles. The story has been changed a little but only adding a few more scenes to it. Than you have all the Disney movies jumping back into theaters being made into 3D to get more consumers to purchase 3D televisions so they can experience the movies when they come out on Blu-Ray/DVD within a few months.
Could this decline be to the fact that no new script writers are moving into the scene or that they are not getting the chance to show what they have? Perhaps it could be due to the fact that Hollywood is under budget and needs to get remakes out to get the fast buck in order to release new movies. For the most part we have seen a decline in movie goers over the past two years and this is probably due to the remakes of movies we have already seen and know the stories to. Hollywood needs to step up the ball if they want to get people to come see movies and actually enjoy them without knowing the outcome before the movie ends.
Final Thougts
As a movie lover and a huge fan of such films as the Star Wars Trilogy, Spider-man, Terminator and other films in those genres I am disappointed at the lack of artistic merit coming from Hollywood lately. Movies are suppose to be a surprise to people with an ending that we can talk about, giving us the want to see the second movie and purchase the merchandise.
When things start to go down hill and you don't see an original film coming out of the movie industry that is like reading a book that has been re-released over and over with a little extra pages added to it. This makes you want to stay home and watch net-flix or something on HBO that has the original movie you loved.
The fact that this is going on might be the reason Hollywood is losing money and not because people are boot-legging or cheating the system. We are consumers should not have to waste money on the same movie ever two years because there is no original concepts coming out anymore. All and all hopefully the artistic merit will return to Hollywood in the next few years so that we can get those movies that are well worth the $10.00 the theaters want to charge to see them.

That was worth reading.
The international film festival seems to be doing better and I believe people prefer 3d video games more than movies because they are interactive. I once read that the TV shows and movies will be in 3D and the characters will be almost real as if they where in you're living room.
Great hub, I thing that Hollywood has lost a lot of it's creativity. Voted up and interesting, hope you enjoy my hubs as well!
A well written hub and engaging hub! Makes one think and try to be more critical of movies today. Voted up!

Good points! I think many recent movies have been re-makes for financial reasons. If the studios are going to pour in millions, they are looking for the 'sure thing'. There are still many interesting independant films being made that have artistic integrity. We're just not seeing them in wide release.
