Dead Island was released on September 6th 2011 and was published by Deep Silver and developed by Techland. The game features four playable characters each with different stats and weapon control. The game takes place on a resort island which has become the victim of a plaque turning all inhabitants into brain eating zombies. Throughout the game players will run into survivors and a lot of zombies.

Unlike traditional zombie games, Dead Island features combat ready zombies, what that means is not only do the zombies slap, push and punch players but there are some that also have weapons and use them. This adds a lot more style to the game play as not many zombie games give players the chance to fight a horde of undead that actually uses weapons.

Dead Island also brings something new into the mix, the fact that it has an RPG system with Experience and upgrades with a nice smooth leveling system.

Welcome to Paradise, a place where the drinks are served cold and the brains are served fresh.

Experience Points and Zombies

For the most part the experience system is well done, it holds little error as you get points from hitting zombies and large amounts from killing them in a certain fashion. This makes it easy to level up, though like most RPG style games, it does take a while to level up no matter how many quests you take. Another avenue that you can do to level a little faster is simply avoid the quests for a bit and just go and kill zombies for a few hours.

Each time you level up you get to spend a point on an ability, this is annoying as you only get the one point to spend and not multiples unless you just let them add up. An improvement on this could have been done is each time you level you get a certain amount of points to spend on the abilities.

Weapons and Stamina?

Dead Island features a whole lot of weapons that players can use throughout the game, each weapon has a durability level to it and will require repairs once it is used up. If you pre-ordered Dead Island than you got the schematic for the a custom weapon, no you do not get the weapon right off the start, you will need to find and build it but it is worth the wait. With the weapons in the game you will need to make sure you repair them every once in a while as they do wear down and become useless.

Stamina is a nice addition for a game like this, it shows a little realism to the character and your stamina wears out the more you do; IE, combat, run, jump.

The Zombies

Depending on your level a zombie might seem a little stronger to you because it's got a higher level. With this comes thinking about a strategy for the game in the sense that you don't want to get over-whelmed by a ton of zombies that will kill you. If you see a zombie with a weapon beware when you attack it, because it will use that weapon on you. Once it is dead you can claim the weapon as your own.

A little tip if you are stomping a zombie on the ground and are not sure if you killed it. When you kill a zombie you will see money pop up and a large yellow xp number meaning the zombie is dead.

Final Thoughts

For any zombie fan Dead Island is well worth the $60.00 and anyone that pre-ordered it will receive a few nice gifts including the weapon schematic, the first DLC for free. Unlike the traditional the zombies of DI don't mob you giving you a chance to explore, they will attack though when you get close to them but also back up and turn away when you are downed.

Leveling Tips: You can either do all the main quests in order and all the side quests or just go out and start to kill zombies and loot anything you can. Money plays a big role in this game as you will need it to repair, upgrade and create your weapons. The experience leveling system is done good.

Over time I hope that we see more than just one DLC and maybe a DLC with more quests added to them and a side storyline would be nice. All and all I give this game an 8 out of 10 score.

I have been playing Dead Island and watching it be played every day at work this last week. My thought on the game is a little less. It's very glitchy and the game play is less then natural flow of game movement. Also the only thing, anyone that I have seen, want to get in the game are guns and once they have them they are disappointed. I guess we were anticipating a lot better of a game but they definitely need to update it and get rid of the ridiculous amount of glitches. That’s for the hub though. I love reading gaming review.

Are you playing it on the PC? I know the PC version has a lot of problems right now, but I have not noticed any on the 360. As for the Guns, personally I prefer the buzzsaw bat, it's my favorite weapon in the game and secondly the spiked bat, both are effective and last for a bit if you upgrade them to level 5 weapon.
